Before surgery

Before surgery

The idea of a possible stoma may seem daunting, but you can rest assured that you will be cared for by competent professionals. We are here to help you prepare at all levels, both physically and psychologically. The need for an ostomy indicates that you are suffering from symptoms related to a dysfunction in your digestive system (intestines) or urinary system (kidneys, bladder). Having an ostomy installed brings significant changes to your life. As with any surgical procedure, it can cause anxiety, both for you and your loved ones. To better understand what it means to have an ostomy, it is important to understand the procedure and prepare a list of questions to ask your medical team before the procedure.

What is a stoma?

A stoma is an opening created in the abdomen during surgery. This opening, called a stoma, provides an alternative route for the disposal of waste produced by the body. The location of the stoma depends on the type of surgery needed. There are different causes that may require an ostomy, such as cancers of the colon, bladder or rectum, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, hereditary diseases such as familial adenomatous polyposis, birth defects, serious abdominal injuries, ureteral obstructions, bladder cancers, or urinary problems. Depending on the situation, a stoma can be temporary to allow healing and the resumption of normal continuity of bodily functions, or permanent. Your doctor will determine whether your stoma will be temporary or permanent based on your health and your specific needs.
There are three types of ostomies

  • Digestive ostomies, also known as intestinal ostomies, include colostomies (formed from the colon) and ileostomies (formed from the small intestine).
  • Urinary stomas, called urostomies, involve the diversion of the urinary tract toward the abdominal wall.
